Making the switch - Promoting Energy Efficient Lighting in the EU

Promoting energy efficient lighting in the EUArtificial lighting is a vital for modern societies and the EU is one of the most brightly lit regions in the world. Lighting alone accounts for around 14 percent of its total electricity consumption. But a great deal of that energy is wasted by old, inefficient technology. By switching to modern, energy efficient lighting systems it is estimated the EU could reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 41 million tonnes every year. That's over 10% of the cut in greenhouse gas emissions the EU promised to make at the 1997 Kyoto climate change talks.

The video looks not only at domestic lighting and the energy savings that can by made by using energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps instead of incandescent light bulbs. But it also covers workplaces and street lighting, an area which is often overlooked. There is one streetlight for every nine of the EU's nearly half a billion citizens, and today most of these lights use old, energy guzzling technology. Switching to energy efficient street lighting would result in huge energy savings and better quality lighting of roads across Europe.

Shot in the Czech capital Prague, Gothenburg in Sweden and Turnhout and Brussels in Belgium, the film features three projects backed by the EU's Intelligent Energy - Europe Programme.

Do more with less Energy – Boosting Energy efficiency in the European industry

Boosting energy efficiencyBetter energy management and the switch to modern energy-efficiency technologies help small companies across Europe cope with increasing energy costs and environmental regulation.

The Intelligent Energy - Europe programme boosts innovations that increase industrial competitiveness and help cut down energy costs. Reducing energy consumption and stimulating more efficient industrial activity can be fairly simple. New technologies are important but are often believed to be costly and complicated. For this reason, the IEE programme supports projects that help companies identify suitable technologies that pay off quickly and create competitive advantage.
